Roofing Rankings Dropped? A Timeline-Based Diagnosis
A sudden drop feels like a penalty. It's usually something more ordinary. Build a timeline and check the evidence.
By the Lead Engine Sales and Marketing team · Updated
Quick answer
When a roofing site's rankings or traffic drop, first confirm the drop is real (not a tracking change or seasonal dip), then line it up against a timeline of site changes, redesigns, hosting moves, competitor activity and any messages in Search Console. Only after ruling those out should you look at broad algorithm updates, and even then compare which pages lost visibility and why.
Timeline
Build the timeline first
Write down the date the drop started, as precisely as your data allows. Then list everything that happened in the weeks before: website edits, plugin or theme updates, a new site launch, domain or hosting changes, tracking changes, new pages, removed pages, Business Profile edits.
- Confirm with two sources. Compare analytics with Search Console clicks. If only one dropped, suspect tracking.
- Check last year. Roofing demand is seasonal and weather-driven. Compare with the same period last year.
- Check site changes. Look for noindex tags, removed pages, changed URLs without redirects, or blocked resources.
- Check migration. After a redesign, compare old and new URL lists. See website redesign SEO.
- Check Search Console messages. Look at Manual actions and Security issues reports.
- Check competitors. Have new competitors or much stronger pages appeared for your key searches?
- Then consider updates. If a broad update aligns with the date and none of the above explain it, review content quality against Google's guidance.
Patterns
What the pattern tells you
| Pattern | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Everything dropped to near zero overnight | Indexing block, site down, or tracking removed |
| Only some pages dropped | Those pages changed, lost redirects, or competitors improved |
| Gradual decline over months | Competition, outdated content, or seasonal demand |
| Maps calls dropped, website steady | Business Profile change, suspension or a new competitor nearby |
| Drop matches last year's same month | Seasonality; see slow season SEO |
Questions
Common questions
Manual penalties appear in Search Console's Manual actions report. If it's empty, there's no manual action on record.
Only after confirming they caused the drop. Undoing everything at once makes it harder to learn what happened.
