Why Isn't My Roofing Website Ranking? An Ordered Diagnosis

"Not ranking" can mean a page isn't indexed, is aimed at the wrong search, or is simply outmatched. Check in order so you fix the actual cause.

By the Lead Engine Sales and Marketing team · Updated

Quick answer

When a roofing website isn't ranking, check in this order: whether the page is indexed at all, whether it matches what searchers want, whether you're looking at the Maps pack or organic results, how strong the competing pages are, whether your content actually answers the buyer, and whether your site has enough relevant links and mentions. Most problems show up in the first three checks, which are free to run in Search Console.

Order

Ordered checks

  1. Is it indexed. Use Search Console's URL Inspection on the page. If it isn't indexed, nothing else matters yet. Look for noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, canonical tags pointing elsewhere, or a page that only exists behind scripts.
  2. Which result type are you judging. The Maps pack and organic website results are ranked differently. A site can rank organically while the Business Profile is missing from Maps, or the reverse. See not showing on Google Maps.
  3. Does the page match the search. Search the phrase yourself. If results are all service pages from local roofers and yours is a blog post, or the reverse, your page type doesn't match intent.
  4. Where is it actually showing. Search Console's Performance report shows average position and queries. A page sitting at position 15 for the right terms needs different work from one that appears for nothing.
  5. How strong are the competing pages. Compare depth, project evidence, local detail and how established the sites are. See why competitors rank higher.
  6. Content and links. Only after the above, look at whether the page truly answers the buyer and whether the site earns relevant mentions.

Example

A worked diagnostic example

This is a hypothetical composite to show the reasoning, not a client case.

A roofer's "metal roofing" page doesn't appear for "metal roof installation" in their town. URL Inspection shows the page is indexed. Search Console shows impressions for "metal roof cost" at average position 28, almost none for "installation". Searching the phrase shows competitors with dedicated installation pages including project photos, panel types they install and the towns they've done jobs in.

Diagnosis: indexing is fine; the page is a short general overview and doesn't match the installation intent. Next step: expand it into a real service page with the systems actually installed, real project examples and contact path, using the service page structure. Then review position in Search Console after it has been recrawled, rather than daily.

Avoid

What not to do while diagnosing

  • Don't judge by one search on your own phone; results are personalized by location and history.
  • Don't create new near-duplicate pages for every variation of the phrase.
  • Don't buy links to push a page that doesn't yet match the search.
  • Don't expect a fix to show the next day; pages need recrawling and re-evaluation.
