Why Do Roofing Competitors Rank Higher? A Fair Gap Analysis
A competitor above you isn't proof they're doing something clever. Compare fairly, then look at specific gaps.
By the Lead Engine Sales and Marketing team · Updated
Quick answer
Competitors usually rank higher because their page better matches the search, they show more real evidence of work, their Business Profile is closer or more prominent, or their site has stronger relevant links and history. Compare the same search, from the same location, for the same result type, then fill in a gap worksheet. One screenshot can show who appeared; it can't tell you why or whether it's typical.
Fair comparison
Make the comparison apples to apples
- Same search phrase, typed the same way.
- Same location (search location strongly affects Maps and local results).
- Same result type: Maps pack vs organic website results.
- Logged out or private browsing to reduce personalization.
- Several checks over different days, not one.

Limits
What one screenshot can and can't tell you
| Can show | Can't show |
|---|---|
| Who appeared for that search, there, then | Whether that's typical across days and locations |
| The titles and snippets used | Why Google chose them |
| Whether they have a Maps listing nearby | How many leads they get from it |
Use the worksheet to find practical gaps you can close with real work. Avoid copying a competitor's pages; build better ones from your own projects. Our audit includes this comparison.
